Lake Victoria is one of the largest freshwater lakes in the world, bordered by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. It plays a significant economic role, supporting many industries and providing livelihoods for millions of people in the region. Unfortunately, a lack of infrastructure and safe transportation posed significant dangers for the island and coastal communities surrounding the lake. Women were especially at risk, taking long journeys either by foot or on board small wooden vessels to access medical care and markets.

The arrival of Waterbus transformed the lives of local women. A ferry network that operates out of Kisumu, Waterbus offers safe, reliable and comfortable transportation for communities in the area, delivering on their promise, “Arrive Alive with Waterbus.”

Project Activities

Waterbus creates access for marginalized communities and offers environmentally friendly transportation. These ferries have significantly increased the mobility of women around the lake, and decreased the number of drownings. The majority of Waterbus users are women small-business entrepreneurs who sell fish to the mainland, and import items for sale on their islands.

Waterbus saves women a tremendous amount of time, reduces their risk of gender-based violence, changes social norms as more and more women become staff and pilots, and increases women’s access to medical care.
